Why East Africa’s Largest Slave Trade in Zanzibar should be on your 2023 Travel Bucket List

I had the pleasure of working in Dubai for two years as a Petroleum Engineer and during that time, I saved every dollar I made. In December 2018, I hit my financial goal so as a gift to myself I decided to celebrate my 23rd birthday somewhere in Africa. I had no idea which country I wanted to explore so, I decided to set another goal and explore each country in Africa. After hours of research and considering my love for animals and passion for learning history, I decided to start my journey in Zanzibar, Tanzania.

Today, Zanzibar is known for its beautiful sandy white beaches, clear waters, and delicious seafood but not too long ago, it was the center of East Africa's biggest slave trade. Roughly 200 years ago, Arab Muslims captured and sold Africans and sent them to the Middle East. I was shocked to learn that my ancestors were forced to work in the very continent where I was currently employed so the following month, I was on a flight to Zanzibar to learn more about its history.

I arrived on January 19, 3 days prior to my birthday, ready to explore this telling island.

Day 1: On the first day of my arrival, I checked into “Hotel Verde Zanzibar” for 4 nights. Hotel Verde is a 5-star luxury hotel located 20 minutes from the international airport and just 10 minutes from Stone Town. That same day I had reservations with ‘Cheetah Rock’ which is a rescue conservation located about two hours north of my hotel. I was able to feed and play with different wildlife animals such as Zebras, Lemurs, Lions, Bushbaby, and Hyenas. Check out my room tour and full experience at Cheetah Rock on YouTube below.

Day 2: On the second day of my vacation, I spent time on the beach reading and enjoying the rest of the day at the hotel spa.

Day 3: On the morning of my birthday, I swam with sea turtles at the Nungwi Natural Aquarium. Which is one of the most exciting things I have EVER done. After, I took a short boat ride to ‘Prison Island’. The prison was built to house slaves before selling them in Stone Town. Not only is it a historical site but its home to the world's largest tortoise, The Aldabra Giant Tortoise. Click the video below to watch my 23rd birthday extravaganza!

Day 4: I spent my last full day on a guided tour of Stone Town where I learned the horrific history of its past slave market. My guide took me to the Slave Trade Exhibit, Hamamni Baths, and Spice Market. This experience truly changed my view on life and is the reason why I quit my 6 figured job, to travel the world and experience different cultures.

I truly hope you all get the chance to travel and explore Zanzibar. Not only to enjoy its beautiful beaches but to learn about the history behind it!
